With a strong team of scientists, both in terms of size and expertise, covering almost all major research areas in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the School currently has significant potential for advancing scientific research, with a focus on: (i) meeting international standards; (ii) integrating research with education to develop a highly qualified workforce; and, most importantly, (iii) producing high-quality research outputs that contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. The School currently has four research centers ready to undertake scientific research activities: the International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence; the Information Safety and Security Center; the International Research Center for Satellite-based Positioning (NAVIS); and the Center for Technology and Digital Transformation Solutions in Education. To further promote research activities oriented toward technology transfer and innovation (startups and spin-offs), the School has established the Innovation Center, which serves as a supporting unit and focal point for the School’s research collaboration activities with enterprises.
The School’s faculty and researchers have consistently received prestigious science and technology awards, including the Nhan Tai Dat Viet Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. In recent years, the School has produced numerous publications in leading and highly reputable journals and international conferences. The School has also secured diverse and highly competitive sources of research funding, including: KC National Programs, Protocol Projects, National Independent Research Projects, and NAFOSTED-funded projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology; ministerial-level research projects funded by the Ministry of Education and Training; projects funded by the Vingroup Innovation Foundation; international collaborative research projects supported by Horizon 2020, ERASMUS, the Center for U.S. Studies, Samsung, IBM, and NAVER; as well as industry-sponsored research projects with partners such as TIKI, MB Bank, Viettel, and PVN.
Several research products developed by the School’s faculty and researchers have gained a foothold in the market, while some have become part of the history of Vietnam’s ICT development:
- BKED word-processing software, developed by Dr. Quách Tuấn Ngọc while he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Information Technology, was among the earliest Vietnamese-language word-processing software developed in Vietnam.
- BKAV antivirus software, developed by MSc. Nguyễn Tử Quảng, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering, is one of the most well-known and widely used antivirus software products in Vietnam.
- NAVISTAR high-precision positioning system, developed by a research team at the NAVIS Center led by Assoc. Prof. Tạ Hải Tùng and Assoc. Prof. Lã Thế Vinh. The product won First Prize at the 2015 Nhan Tai Dat Viet Awards and is currently being transferred to numerous organizations across Vietnam.
- Vbee speech synthesis system, developed by a research team led by Dr. Nguyễn Thị Thu Trang from the Department of Software Engineering. The product won First Prize at the 2018 Nhan Tai Dat Viet Awards and is steadily establishing its position in the market.
- BKCA fingerprint acquisition device project, implemented by the NAVIS Center to support the development of the National Population Database. The device enables the acquisition of complete fingerprint sets, including both flat and rolled fingerprints, for use in the national population database development system.
- Citizen ID QR Code scanning device project, implemented by the NAVIS Center to support health declaration procedures. The solution provides equipment for reading Citizen ID cards using QR codes and connects to a server to authenticate users for health declaration purposes.
- BKCAeID mobile verification device project, implemented by the NAVIS Center to support the work of the police in administrative management of social order. The device is designed to verify citizens’ information through Citizen ID cards and fingerprint and facial biometric data. It enables verification that the Citizen ID card matches its holder and identification of citizens through biometric data matching.
- Specialized vehicle management, routing, and journey monitoring system for banks, implemented by the NAVIS Center. The solution includes journey-monitoring devices and IoT devices installed on specialized vehicles, together with a software platform for managing vehicles, equipment, and personnel and monitoring vehicle journeys, including location tracking, image monitoring, and detection of abnormal events.
- Smartlocker management system, implemented by the NAVIS Center. The project provides a solution for managing, assigning access rights to, and controlling smart lockers in office buildings. Users authenticate themselves using RFID employee cards or QR codes to access their assigned lockers.
- COOPY plagiarism detection system, developed by Assoc. Prof. Lê Thanh Hương and her research team. The system has been deployed at more than 20 universities and educational institutions.
- Daotao.ai Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform, researched and developed by the Center for Technology and Digital Transformation Solutions in Education (EdTech Center) under the School of Information and Communication Technology. The platform provides free, open, and diverse online learning opportunities for everyone, regardless of geographical location or educational background. Daotao.ai is capable of providing tens of thousands of high-quality courses to thousands of educational institutions and millions of learners. In addition, the platform integrates AI technologies to monitor learners’ study processes and uses facial recognition for attendance and anti-cheating purposes during examinations.
In addition to education, research, and technology transfer activities, since 2010, the School has continuously organized SOICT – Symposium on Information and Communication Technology, an international conference that has increasingly established its reputation within the scientific community. The conference proceedings are archived and indexed by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Web of Science (WoS/ISI), and Scopus.
