Title: The future of virtual reality
Virtual reality allows for unparalleled immersion into mediated environments, but what else can it do and where is it going? I discuss virtual reality in the context of the history of media technology and human mind. I discuss how we are remapping senses to provide new kinds of interaction and experience, from navigating vast scales and data, to creating super-presence with sound responsive environments, and finish with some speculation about the future.
Now a JSPS Post-Doctoral Fellow at Keio Media Design (KMD) in Tokyo, Benjamin Outram is employing expertise from his background in physics and Oxford PhD in liquid crystal science to explore new possibilities in the space between the human mind and our mediated worlds. His previous work in multi-mixed sense virtual reality has been showcased at Tokyo Game Show, Siggraph, in several mobile apps, and with Crystal Vibes at Sundance Film Festival 2017.
